Teachers

Q: What is Socrates?
A: Socrates is an innovative learning engine and classroom management tool that creates individualized learning paths for each student and engages them so that they are excited to learn.

Q: Is Socrates based on Common Core Standards?
A: Yes! All applicable Socrates categories are mapped to Common Core Standards.

Q: What grades is Socrates for?
A: Socrates is designed for Kindergarten to 8th-grade students.

Q: If kids are playing games, are they learning?
A: Our model integrates learning with gameplay to create a fun, engaging experience for the children. Kids must answer questions and progress through their learning in order to earn the tokens required to play games. The games keep the child engaged and require them to constantly go back to the educational content – the more they play, the more they learn.

Q: Can I control when the children play games?
A: Yes – the teacher can lock individual or all games at any time for all students or individual students.

Q: Can I assign specific topics to students?
A: Yes – on its own, Socrates will select appropriate content based on the individualized learning path of each student. However, the teacher may override this at any time and assign a specific standard or topic to one or more students.

Q: How do I know where a child needs help?
A: Socrates produces reports describing areas of difficulty for the entire classroom, groups of students, and individual students. Sample questions are generated based on the topic.

Q: Can my students use Socrates at home?
A: Absolutely! Socrates is designed to integrate the home and classroom learning experience. Teachers can see activity completed at home and see how the student is progressing. Teachers can even assign homework to students to complete when using Socrates at home, and it is automatically graded!

Q: Does Socrates do testing and benchmarking?
A: Yes! Socrates has an automated testing and benchmarking module. Testing locks the kids out of the games until the test is completed. Tests can be timed, and questions can have different weights. Best of all, results can be seen in real-time while the kids are taking the test. The same test can be given at a later date to compare results and progress.

Q: Can Socrates manage multiple classrooms?
A: Yes! Each teacher will have access to the Teacher Command Center for each classroom and they can have an unlimited number of classes assigned to them.

Q: What does Socrates cost?
A: Due to our National Science Foundation funding, Socrates math content is being offered at no charge for a limited time to students. The other Socrates modules and content are available on a monthly or annual subscription charge. Please contact your local Socrates representative or contact us directly through the website for the latest pricing and discounts available in your area.

Q: How can I get Socrates at my school?
A: Contact us for more information about how to get Socrates. We can have a school set up and running in just a few days.

Parents

Q: What is Socrates?
A: Socrates is an innovative learning engine that creates a truly customized learning path for each child. Using Socrates, your child will progress across thousands of learning categories at their own pace.

Q: How will Socrates help my child to learn?
A: Classrooms are unable to provide truly individualized learning experiences – instead they teach to the needs of the average student. However, every child is unique. Your child may excel at certain topics but struggle with others. If they are doing poorly on a topic – the classroom still has to move on. If your child is doing well, their talents are not being maximized.

Q: How does age and grade impact learning with Socrates?
A: It doesn’t! Grade level provides us with a starting point in our learning path. After that, your child learns at their own pace category by category. They could be at their current grade level in fractions, behind their grade level in astronomy, but be several levels above in learning spelling. There are no limitations placed, and the engine adjusts based on every question and results from your child’s play.

Q: What categories of learning are available?
A: We have Math available and English is currently being released. In the future, we will be releasing numerous other educational categories including sciences, social studies, and more.

Q: What are Tickets and Tokens?
A: As your child answers questions correctly, they earn tickets. Those tickets can be used to unlock emojis, buy collectible card packs, and other fun rewards. They can also win tokens, which can be used to play “just for fun” games. We recommend allowing your child to use their tokens and tickets how they prefer as a reward for their hard work.

Q: What is the Command Center?
A: The Parent Command Center provides a way for you to engage with your child’s learning. Parents can do many things in the Parent Command Center including:

  • See where your child is struggling and help them practice
  • Create custom messages to encourage your child to reach goals
  • Set daily goals
  • Adjust the level of challenge of their questions
  • Monitor your child’s progress across thousands of categories
  • View progress by topic in summary or detail
  • Assign homework for your child with automatically scoring results
  • Change settings that impact your child’s experience

Q: Can I turn off certain games or features?
A: Yes, in the Parent Command Center you can turn off specific games or remove features that you prefer your child not use.

Q: What is the Report Card?
A: Every day, parents will get an email with the results of their child’s progress for the day. It’s a great way to see what your child is learning. If you prefer, you can change the frequency of messages or turn them off.
